"Trinitrotoluene is the second oldest and most commonly used explosive known to man. This explosive is highly stable. Contains a quarter-pound charge."

Apart from ambushes and fighting enemy armor, the TNT with any detonator attached can be used to increase Merc's Explosives skill and Wisdom. The trick is to set the explosive and immediately disarm it, then the process is repeated. Wisdom grows slower than Explosives Skill, usually 5 points increase in Explosives equals increasing 1 point of Wisdom.
This method requires frequent load/save mechanism, for the explosives tend to go off when tackled by unskilled Merc and/or with Wisdom below 80. It is worth in developing both the skill and the stat at once, so trainees receive knowledge in Explosives and gain a stat responsible for faster learning. It works especially well with mercenaries, who have starting Wisdom above 75.

- Merging the TNT with RDX will turn it into a HMX.
- If you do not have any detonator, the TNT can also be detonated by setting off another explosives near it, such as grenades. (Not in JA1)
