Gus again gives you incorrect details; the compound is located to your north-west. It is rectangular building with one eastern end protruding almost to the west with an open space. The open area isn't mined although it looks as if it is. The area is a Metavira-like terrain, heavily forested in the south-west, quite forested in the north-east and forests and trees and bushes to the east. Don't bother with the forested areas, kill the enemies you almost immediately face. There are two ways of achieving the mission. One is kill the red-shirts in the way, move to the forest towards the west and use a live explosive if you have one and blow a hole just above the western side where the weird protrusion almost reaches. Move to the southern room and hopefully the door is unlocked, if not a red-shirt outside will drop a key when you kill him. On the table to the left is the mortar.
The second way is to approach the north-east side where there's a door, unlocked. Enter it and find the mortar by unlocking the door from a key another red-shirt outside drops. The north-west unlocked room has four crates containing land mines. The southern area is accessible via another padlock key a red-shirt outside will drop. There are three crates there, one with a mortar shell, one with rigged C4 and the third with three rigged hand grenades. But there's a pressure switch on the ground and your mercs may trigger it. A merc with great explosive skills may warn you not to approach that area. One red-shirt will drop a crowbar in case your mercs have low health and can't open the crates. The south-eastern room with an unlocked doors holds nothing.
If you successfully retrieve the mortar, it will be added to your inventory but you need to repair it to make it work.
