A mercenary, merc for short, is a person who takes part in an armed conflict who is not a national or a party to the conflict and is "motivated to take part in the hostilities by the desire for private gain." In the Jagged Alliance series, the majority of the playable characters and some enemies are mercenaries. The commander (player) can hire mercenaries from mercenary agencies, Association of International Mercenaries (A.I.M.) being the main from the series, and More Economic Recruiting Center (M.E.R.C.) and Institute for Mercenary Profiling (I.M.P.) being introduced in Jagged Alliance 2. Jagged Alliance Online has a custom agency run by the player.
Each mercenary is unique, having their own skills and preferences. They may refuse to join or abandon the commander for several reasons, such as the commander having a low reputation and the team having someone they dislike. If the commander has enough money, he can bribe some of them to continue on his employ. Many will also leave as soon as possible when carrying a large amount of money.
In Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, any merc hired before midnight the current day will arive 12:00 the day after.
