The most common equipment for fighting Crepitus would be a gas mask, which offers SOME (not complete) protection from the gas they spit. Venomous green gas eats through the mask quite fast and deals considerable damage, so when you find your merc standing in a green cloud - get him away ASAP. as an potion, you might want to get your mercs wearing night vision goggles instead. It'll cover their eyes from the spitting and they'll see better. Keep in mind that the UV-goggles are useless underground.
Throwing grenades is a good technique against the Crepitus Queen as she doesn't move at all.

Defending a town against Crepitus attacks may turn into a bloodshed for your Militia, since the Crepitus' mighty attacks and thick bodies almost always give them the upper hand in auto-combat mode. After losing a battle, you will find some of the city dwellers eaten and the morale in town greatly decreased. To avoid that, simply keep one or two mercs in each sector of the town, so you might avoid the auto-combat mode and therefore allow you Militia to fight the Crepitus much more effectively. Plus, your mercs might also contribute to the battle, especially if you keep in mind that the Crepitus can't attack you while you are on a rooftop - they can't climb, so there will be no melee, and their ranged attacks are quite inaccurate. So even a single unskilled merc with a gun and lots of ammunition could repel an attack like that. If there are no comfortable rooftops nearby, hide behind fences and inside buildings; this will help a merc avoid the melee attacks, but the spits are still dangerous.

Another way to cripple the Crepitus population in the mine while keeping your mercs away from a straight fight with an oversized bug would be to send in the Madlab's Robot - it has been noticed that the Crepitus do not attack it at all, since it doesn't smell! If you plan on such an approach, it would be a good idea to equip it with an M249 Minimi, which boasts a burst of 6 rounds, but if you haven't obtained it yet - just use any weapon with a long burst. Yes, and don't forget to reload the robot's gun every once in a while.

The Crepitus Queen's tentacle and spit attacks are quite powerful, so try to hide your attacking merc behind a wall in the end of a turn. A decent experience level is advised, so that no interrupts from the Queen would occur.

Crepitus (often called "bugs" or "alien bugs") are a species of giant insects encountered in Jagged Alliance 2.

They were created by the Queen as a result of a genetic experiment (like the Bloodcats). Crepitus live underground but may occassionally emerge to the surface and attack player's mercs.

Player will encounter them if the sci-fi mode has been chosen at the start of the game.

Location

After a head miner has notified that one of your mines has been infested (the mine can't produce if you don't kill the bugs), they are encountered in the infested mine and around it. This usually happens when you have conquered at least three mines in Arulco. You will also see a cutscene in which the Queen tells Elliot to stop feeding bodies to the bugs.

Varieties

There are different, specialized stages of Crepitus.

Crepitus Larva

Dull white in color. Doesn't move and doesn't attack. Don't put that thing's blood in a jar, it's human blood and the guy southeast of Grumm won't buy it.

Crepitus Adolescent

Dull grey in colour. Spits acid. It gets scared and runs away if it's the last one alive.

Adult Male Crepitus

Bright green in colour. Spits acid. Its blood can be sold.

Adult Female Crepitus

Bright reddish-brown in colour. Uses claw attacks.

Queen

The Crepitus Queen is encountered on the lowest level of the infested mine. She spits jets of acid and attacks with tentacles. Lay down to avoid the tentacles. Kill her (preferable with grenades, mortar, explosive or LAW) and you have killed the bugs once and for all.

Strategy

The Crepitus are a sort of genetically altered insects, that, unlike natural species, are greatly increased in size and also have retained some of the insect-like capabilities, such as a venomous spit. Bred by Deidranna's scientists in Arulco, these mutants are unleashed upon one of your mines (generally in Drassen) after you have achieved a certain progress in game. They are fast and attack in groups, so you should bring lots of ammunition. Weapons that are capable of firing burst are very useful against them. Hollow point ammunition is recommended.

Bring regeneration boosters with you when attacking the Crepitus lair. They're very useful, since you can't play doctor underground.

Mustard gas is excellent when deployed in a passageway that Creoitus use to get to your mercs.

There are a couple of ways to make your life easier when attacking the Crepitus underground. Firstly, you might find Gabby and buy some elixir from him - when applied to a merc, this greenish liquid will make it hard for the blind creatures to actually detect him. Spit attacks from the Crepitus are much less likely now, though melee attacks an elixir-protected mercs have been reported from time to time.

Trivia

  • Crepitus is the latin word for rattling or rustling noises. In medical terminology it is the popping noise made by cracking a joint or the scraping noise made by broken bones rubbing together. It also refers to the foul gas that builds up in tissues, like in gas gangrene.
  • Killing the Crepitus boosts your mercs' morale greatly. You will also hear some funny dialogue.
  • Your mercs' status will raise greatly. Especially Marksmanship and Experience.
