Pocketed assault vests provide the mercs with slots to hold items, and come in 2, 3, 4 and 5 pocket varieties. A mercenary without an assault vest (or wearing a non-pocket Ultra Shield Vest) has only the right- and left-hand slots available to carry and use items. They are green, and every mercenary hired from A.I.M. possesses one of these, along with a Radio or Extended Ear.
Assault Vests were phased out in Jagged Alliance 2, which opted to give each mercenary a vest and backpack combination that contained the same amount of inventory slots.
Jagged Alliance 2 v1.13 revives the variable-inventory aspect with the introduction of varying types of load-bearing gear, which are equipped on the torso and backpack/shoulder slots much like in the first game.
